Traveling with the family this summer?

Are you headed out on a family trip this summer?  While it’s always worth it once you get there (especially if you are headed to Maine) traveling to and from your destination with little ones in tow isn’t always easy.

Here are our best tips:

  • Don’t stress, try to stay relaxed and go into it with a positive attitude
  • Unless you are going to a deserted island, don’t over pack.. chances are you can rent it or buy it once you get to your destination
  • Stock up on favorite snacks and new toys/books/games and bring them out slowly
  • If you’re driving in a car with a toddler, invest in a lap table
  • If you’re flying, you know your child best, but often kids do well flying in the morning when they are normally awake
  • Bringing a stroller can be a huge asset in the airport, it’s a great place for extra stuff and for your kiddo to take a rest or just be strapped in and safe.
  • The Mommy Hook is a great accessory for your stroller during your travels.
  • If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler,  bring a carrier and keep it handy.  Wearing your child onto the plane is usually the easiest way to board
  • Always have a change of clothes handy

Our friends at Britax are sharing some great family travel info that we love!!

Remember that we have some great products available whether you are traveling to or from Maine!  Let us know if you have any questions; we are here to help!

Strawberry Season is Here

I was so excited last week to walk into the Pineland Farms market and smell the sweet native strawberries. I couldn’t resist buying some until we get a chance to go picking ourselves.

Every year my husband raves about the sweetness of the native strawberries like he has never had them before. He could sit and eat an entire quart without thinking twice. Besides eating them fresh from the container, here are a few of my favorite ways to eat strawberries….

Strawberry Pancakes - take your favorite pancake mix and add sliced strawberries, don’t forget some Maine maple syrup to make them extra special.

Strawberry Salad -

  • Baby Spinach
  • Goat cheese
  • Strawberries
  • Almonds
  • Balsamic vinaigrette

Mix together first 4 items and then top with balsamic dressing.

*You can add chicken or shrimp and make it a meal.

Strawberry shortcake – The “Maine” Way

I realized a few summers ago that not everyone eats strawberry shortcake with biscuits, like we often do here in Maine, when my cousins from Virginia were visiting. They fell in love with this preparation.

  • Make (or buy) your favorite biscuits. Here is a SUPER easy recipe that I like.
  • Take three cups of strawberries, slice and sprinkle with two tablespoons of sugar and the juice of one lemon. Let this sit for a few hours if possible to get lots of yummy strawberry-ness
  • Top biscuit and strawberries with fresh whipped cream – Yum!

Strawberry Lemonade

  • Blend one cup of strawberries with 1 cup of water and tw0 tablespoons of sugar until pureed
  • Combine strawberry juice with two cups of fresh lemon juice, six cups of water, one cup of sugar
  • Chill mixture

If you want to jazz this up a little more you can …

  • add sparkling water ( do this when you serve so you don’t lose the bubbles)
  • add some fresh mint
  • add your favorite liquor – vodka, tequila, rum, gin… go nuts & thank me later :)

If this has you salivating for strawberries, here is a link of farms where you can pick your own in the area!

Enjoy!  What’ s your favorite strawberry dish?

A closer look at our favorite gear!

At Mainely Babies, we have an awesome line-up of baby gear available for rent, and are continuously adding to our inventory.  When you visit Maine, you can be assured that our gear will give you all the comforts of home!  We can say this, because we have carefully chosen our products based on our own experience.  We are two moms with four kids between us; we love baby gear and researching new products, and have tried many brands throughout our parenting journeys.  Here are a few of our favorites in action and a little bit on why we love them:

Calvin (and mom) loved the Beco Gemini! We are excited to have Beco Gemini carriers available for rent; here’s a few reasons why we all love it:

  • It’s a 4 in 1 carrier, offering 4 possible carrying positions, back, front, side, and front- forward facing.
  • We love that you can cross the straps in the back, an especially important feature for petite parents
  • It’s one of the few carriers that can be used comfortably and correctly for wee ones without and infant insert
  • You can get a snug and secure fit easily
  • It offers extra head support for little ones, but it can easily be snapped down if you don’t need it.

 city mini gt

Jack and Calvin have a lot of fun riding in the Baby Jogger City Mini GT- We think this is one of the best all-around double strollers and can’t wait for you to try it out; here’s some of our favorite features:

  • Baby Jogger offers one of the easiest folds out there, just one simple step
  • The forever air tires can tackle all sorts of Maine terrain without worrying about punctured tires or needing air
  • The seats are a cinch to recline and can virtually lay flat, which makes it great for little and tired travelers
  • At 32.5lbs, the City Mini GT is a fairly light and easy to maneuver for a double stroller
  • The adjustable handle bar is a great feature especially for parents of different heights sharing pushing duties

Blake loves the MamaRoo – the gentle motion of this swing is a huge hit with this little guy! Here are a few reasons to love the MamaRoo:

  • There are five motions that mimic the way parents naturally soothe their children. Blake especially loved the car ride option. I think we all know there is nothing like a car ride to get your little one to nap! Save on gas and use the MamaRoo!
  • As Blake got older, he loved looking at the balls above him and trying to grab and throw them.
  • Just like with adults, music is soothing to children (well certain music) you can plug your mp3 player into the swing and play soothing sounds or songs for your baby.

I always say the Rock n’ Play is my number one recommendation for new moms to put on their baby registry. This was the best baby item we had for Alex when he was a baby, here are some reasons why:

  • The slight incline of the seat is great for babies with reflux to sleep comfortably, and as they get older it’s a great place to put them while you eat dinner to make them feel included.
  • The contour on the sides of the seat gives the baby a snug feeling like being in your arms.
  • We used this in place of a co-sleeper right next to our bed and it worked perfectly.
  • The Rock n’ Play is lightweight so you can carry it from room to room easily.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions on our products.  We love to talk about our gear and are always happy to chat with you!  Additionally, if you don’t see something you’re looking for, please let us know and we will always do our best to accommodate.  We want your stay in Maine to be as stress free as possible!

Thanks for stopping  by and checking us out!  Let us know how we can help!
